Why an Ultrasound Is Important
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of what’s happening inside the uterus. This can help answer key questions such as:
- How far along am I? This helps clarify your options; medical abortion, for example, is FDA-approved only through ten weeks of gestation.
- Is the pregnancy in the uterus? Some women experience ectopic pregnancy, which is when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. It requires immediate treatment to prevent complications.
- Is there a heartbeat? If the pregnancy has ended naturally, you have miscarried. A miscarriage may require follow-up care or monitoring to prevent long-term issues.
Before Any Decision
If you’re considering abortion, confirming the gestational age and location of the pregnancy is essential. Different procedures are used at various stages of pregnancy, and an ultrasound can help protect your safety and provide insight into your specific situation.
And if you are thinking about adoption or parenting, ultrasound results can give you a clearer sense of what is happening and help you plan. When you have all the details in hand, you can make more confident decisions.
